Although tenuous, the relationship between the church and the villagers remains relatively peaceful until one day when three converts overstep their bounds. They come into the village and boast that all the gods are dead and impotent and that they will burn all their shrines. The men are seized and beaten until bloody. Stories also circulate around the village that a place of judgement has been built in Umuofia to protect the followers of the religion and that a man had already been hanged for killing a missionary.
During this time, the church, however, also has its share of problems. Two osu, or outcasts, from the village attend the church one Sunday and when the service is finished the other converts want to drive them out. Mr. Kiaga explains that all men are equal.....
