Chapter 14 Summary
Okonkwo and his family are received in Mbaino by the eldest surviving member of his mother's family, her younger brother, Uchendu. Okonkwo is given a plot of ground on which to build his compound and two or three pieces of land to farm in the coming season. Each of Uchendu's five sons gives him three hundred yam seeds. Okonkwo's family works hard and is able to plant a new farm, but he is overcome with despair. He had hoped to become a lord of the clan, to obtain all four titles, but that is no longer possible. Uchendu notices Okonkwo's despair and resolves to talk with him after the isa-ifi ceremony.
Uchendu's youngest son is marrying a new wife and this is the final ceremony; one of confession. The bride-price has already been paid and the palm-wine delivered to her family. With all the family present, the bride, holding a...
