Chapter 12 Summary

The next day, Obierika celebrates his daughter's uri; it is the day on which her suitor will bring palm-wine for the family and kinsmen. At daybreak, Okonkwo's family sets out for Obierika's compound, but because of the tiring events of the night before Ezinma is still sleeping and Ekwefi asks Nwoye to explain to Obierika's wife why they will be late. Emerging from the cave earlier that morning, Chielo had said nothing nor shown any surprise at seeing Okonkwo and Ezinma there. She returned to the village (they followed behind at a distance), took the child to Ekwefi's hut and then left without saying a word.

Although no-one knows it, Okonkwo had also had a long night. He had gone to the caves three times to look for Ezinma, and it was only on.....
