Chapter 11 Summary
Sitting alone in their hut, Ekwefi and Ezinma tell one another stories. Ezinma is just beginning her story when they hear a great cry in the night; it is Chielo, the priestess of Agbala. She comes to Okonkwo's compound and tells him that Agbala wants to see his daughter. He asks her to return in the morning when Ezinma is awake, but she insists on taking the child.
Ekwefi brings Ezinma outside and expresses her wish to go with them, but Chielo vehemently refuses. Ezinma starts to cry and Ekwefi gives her a piece of dried fish to soothe her. Carrying Ezinma on her back, Chielo leaves the compound. Shortly afterwards, Ekwefi makes up her mind to follow them.
Without a moon, the night is pitch dark and Ekwefi is able only to follow by the sound of Chielo's chanting. At one point, realizing that someone is behind her, Chielo...
