The trial takes place at the village ilo. Mgbafo and her three brothers make up one group, while her husband, Uzowulu, and his relatives make up the other. An iron gong sounds and a flute is blown, and the nine egwugwu, each representing one village of the clan, emerge from a hut and then sit on their stools in front of the two parties. Okonkwo is one of the masked egwugwu.
Uzowulu presents his case to the egwugwu, telling them how one day in the rainy season his in-laws came to his house, beat him up and took his wife and children away with them. At first he waited for her to return, but when she did not he visited his in-laws and demanded they return her bride-price.
