Chapter 3 Summary

Okonkwo's success in life does not come easily; unlike other men, he inherits nothing from his father. In order to earn his first yam seeds he works for Nwakibie, a wealthy man in the village who at the time had nine wives, thirty children, three barns, and had taken all the highest titles in the clan but one. On the day he first visits Nwakibie to ask for a favor, he takes a pot of palm-wine, an alligator pepper, a kola nut and a cock with him. Once there, he pays tribute to Nwakibie and his household. They drink and chat and when at last the wine is finished, Okonkwo explains why he has come: he has cleared a farm for himself but has no seed. He asks Nwakibie to give him some.....
