Summary

In Chapter 13, Cassie continues to try to put emotional distance between herself and her mother, while her mother continues to try to create more emotional closeness between them. Diana says that she wants to be Cassie’s friend. She also asks Cassie to forgive her for leaving Cassie’s father ten years ago. Diana says that she was never sexually unfaithful to Cassie’s father. She left him because she was in love with Wallace, and Wallace was dying of pulmonary fibrosis. Thus, Cassie left so that she could be with Wallace for his last remaining years. Cassie begins the process of forgiving Diana, but she has difficulty doing so. In Chapter 14, Cassie tries to avoid Owen at work, but Captain Murphy continually tasks Cassie with training Owen on various skills.
