Summary

Chapters 43 and 44 cover Day 5 after the storm. In the morning, as Chapter 43 begins, Frankie, Stotts, and the bonobos ate all of the remaining food in the house. Frankie led the bonobos upstairs to comb through the household’s clothing. Goliath chose a spaghetti-strap dress with sequins. Frankie tried to put gloves on the bonobos’ hands, but even the stretchy ones were too small.

Frankie put on some button-down shirts, a bathrobe, and jeans that were too big. Stotts wore a sweatshirt, overalls, and a tuxedo jacket. Frankie’s shoes were too big; Stotts’ shoes were too small.

Stotts left the house first, making sure everything was safe. Frankie left an open bag of dog food on the porch for the beagle Stotts had rescued, hoping he would stay behind, but he continued to follow the group at a distance. Stotts led the group eastward...
