Summary

Chapters 29 through 31 cover Day 1 of the storm. Chapter 29 begins with Frankie waking up in the bonobo building. When she turned on her Lenses, random characters obscured part of her vision, so she turned them off again.

She found Stotts in the kitchen, and both were uncomfortable with the intimacy of such early-morning contact. Stotts was cutting printed papaya into smaller pieces to make them look less uniform. He asked her to load more food cartridges into the 3-D printer. When she reached for some, she got a shock from static electricity. Stotts explained that the dust particles outside were rubbing against each other like “millions of tiny feet scuffing around on a giant shag rug” (3111). Frankie could not load the printer until Stotts showed her how.
