Summary

1990 began with Sedaris in Raleigh spending New Year’s with his sister, Gretchen. Lately, everyone around him had been saying thank god the eighties are over and Sedaris wonders if this is something that people say about every decade.

While in Raleigh, Sedaris worked on his parent’s rental properties with his brother Paul before returning to Chicago to continue teaching. There are many students who Sedaris dislikes and foresees it being a difficult semester.

One day in February, Sedaris spent all day waiting on “Kool-T” (228), a weed deliveryman. Kool-T was supposed to have arrived at one in the afternoon, but finally got to Sedaris’s apartment at nine thirty at night. Having to be stuck inside all day made Sedaris go crazy, as he did not know what to do, stating that “I really felt like I was in prison” (229). Part of the day...
