The Wretched of the Earth Important People
Frantz Fanon, MD
A black native of the former French colony of Martinique, educated in France and assigned to a French colonial hospital in Algeria at the time of the revolution. Fanon applied his psychiatric insights to the colonial society and decided that the parasitic colonial system must be overthrown to permit the health of the native population.
General Bellounis
The French colonial military official in charge of maintaining law and order in Algeria, and in charge of leading counter-offensives to the rebels.
Karl Marx
The social theoretician and political philosopher credited with the development of the communist manifesto, whose work and influence are mentioned often by Fanon.
Nikita Kruschev
Former Soviet premier during the Cold War era famous for banging his shoe on the table at the United Nations and shouting: "We will bury you!" at the U.S. Fanon mentions Kruschev as a Third World leader whose public persona involves projection of violence.
