Summary

The story begins from the perspective of Rick, sitting shot-gun in a car being driven recklessly by James-my-man. James-my-man begins taking pills from his dashboard, and Rick is concerned for their safety. Rick is hitchhiking to move back to Cross River, where he was raised, after living in Virginia for many years. James-my-man is an Underground Railroad Reenactor, which Rick does not know existed. Every year, James-my-man drives the route of the underground railroad to Canada, often picking up hitchhikers along the way.
