Summary

Chapter 6 opens with a photo of Fannie on a hospital bed. There is no caption. Bridgett's tenth birthday was an elaborate affair and she said it marked the moment she knew Fannie's prediction of happiness in their new home became reality. Just days before that party, Federal officials had arrested dozens and claimed they had shut down the Numbers in Detroit. Within a day, the game was running again but Fannie put in some security measures, including adding an unlisted telephone line that was used exclusively for taking bets.
