Summary

Part 2, Section 2 starts with Chapter Twenty, also in June of 1950 in Ehrenheim, this time from Ania’s perspective. Ania has received another mysterious letter with no return address that states, “I forgive you. You did what you felt was best. But you are not finished with me yet” (193). Included in the envelope is a picture of a man and a woman, that Shattuck suggests is Ania with another man. Ania decides to visit the return address of the previous address, but the people there tell her he’s not there anymore. Ania has to wait for him, and the waiting begins to weigh upon her. She thinks “He was a body washed up in her mind, dragging the tangle of her own bad choices like so much kelp” (196).
