Summary

Part 1, Section 3 begins with Chapter Ten at Burg Lingenfels in August 1945. Benita, Ania, Marianne, and all their children are now living together in the castle. They watch Russian soldiers approach the castle. Marianne tells Benita to take the girls down to the cellar and she will handle the Russians. Ania decides to stay with Marianne. The Russians approach the castle and tell Marianne they need food, water and shelter. She offers them the barn and food and water. When she comes to the barn with the soup she and Ania prepared, the men tell her the soup is not enough, and they want to eat the horse they saw. Marianne is angry, but Ania offers to get the horse, who belongs to the caretaker Kellerman.
