Summary

In Chapter 23, Patty was distracted at work. She did not notice Magda and Lisa's growing relationship. She did not complain about Frank. She was thinking about their surprising evening, feeling they now had a secret that "placed them in a different relationship with each other" (91). Excited to get home from work to be with him again, Patty was discouraged to find the house empty. He did not return home for the rest of the night.

In Chapter 24, when Magda returned from her walk with Lisa, she telephoned Mrs. Miles to apologize for her daughter's tardiness. Afterwards, Rudi told Stefan and Magda he wanted to marry an Australian. The couple was surprised. Then, Magda thought of Fay.
