Summary

On Sunday morning, the day after the discovery of the skull, the family once again comes to Ivy House for Sunday lunch. Toby again notes an unsettling morbidity in the festivities, as they occur in the context of the human skull discovery. During the lunch, various family members share their theories about who the skull in the backyard could have been. Declan calls Toby back, but Toby cancels their visit, as he feels overwhelmed by the presence of both the police and his family.

Rafferty informs Toby and Hugo that the whole garden has to be dug up as they found more remains in the wych elm, which is upsetting to Toby and Hugo. Hugo allows it on the condition that they wait two hours, so that they begin after the family has left.
