Malta Kano travels to Canada, the United States and Europe, sampling the water along the way. In England, she helps the police investigate the disappearance and murder of a little girl. The search for perfect water continues until she finds herself on the island of Malta and decides to change her first name to "Malta" like the island. Having no one to consult for advice for many years, and in constant physical pain, Creta decides to kill herself.
