Summary

In Book 3, the narrator recounted what she had heard about how her mother had given birth first to her older sister, and then one year later, her older brother, who likewise died shortly after being born. He did not even get to open his eyes. Three years later, the narrator was born. Then, four years after her birth, her younger brother was born. The narrator thought about how if her two older siblings had not died, then she and her younger brother would have never been born. She thought about how her mom had to live with “shattered memories inside her” (137). Then the narrator continued to think about her older sister and that if she had lived, then she would have never been born.
