Summary

Part 2 of the novel is set in September. In Chapter 8, when Tom and Jake arrived at their new house, Tom had an ominous feeling, as if someone was watching them. He compared the appearance of the house to a face that had been beaten. Inside, he felt as if he and Jake were not alone. He noticed that Jake was exploring the house but had a strange look on his face, as if he was expecting to find something that was not there.

While Tom was filling the shelves in his office with the novels he had written, he heard a creak in the floor above him, a strange noise because Jake was playing in the living room. Tom went upstairs but there was no one there. On his way back downstairs, he looked at the pile of mail addressed to Dominic Barnett...
