Summary

In Chapter 1, the third person narrator introduces Alexa Monroe, the female protagonist. She walked into the Fairmont hotel in San Francisco to visit her sister, Olivia. Olivia lived in New York and had just made partner at her law firm. She was in town for the night, and Alexa was going up to Olivia’s room with a bottle of champagne, crackers, and cheese so that the sisters could celebrate before going out on the town. Alexa got into the elevator. Because she was texting on her phone, she did not realize there was a man on the elevator with her until the elevator stopped and the lights went out.
