Lockless

Lockless is a tobacco plantation in Virginia. Hiram was born into slavery on the Lockless plantation and was raised by his mother until she was sold to another plantation. Hiram was nine years old at the time, and the slave Thena took over the responsibility of raising him. Hiram escaped from Lockless at age 19 with the help of the Underground Railroad. He returned about one year later and worked to free the rest of the Lockless slaves with the help of Corrine Quinn.

Ryland’s Jail

Ryland’s Jail is a prison structure located near the Lockless plantation. It is not a conventional jail, but rather an establishment for the imprisonment and punishment of runaway slaves.
