Summary

In Chapter 30, Hiram then secretly communicates with Hawkins to craft possible plans of freeing Thena and Sophia, even without Corrine’s help if necessary. Hiram visits Sophia one night, and she tells him of her own experiences following Hiram and Sophia’s imprisonment the previous year. To Hiram’s surprise, Sophia reveals that Corrine told her the truth of where Hiram had gone when he left Virginia, and that he would eventually return to help others. Hiram’s esteem/trust towards Corrine increases slightly. In Chapter 31, Hiram is relatively happy in the following weeks as he and Sophia spend time together, and as he and Hawkins further consider options for freeing slaves from Lockless.
