Summary

In Chapter 21, Hiram, Raymond, and Otha stay the night at Moses’ camp, and Hiram speaks briefly with Moses. Moses reassures Hiram of the righteousness of his helping the Railroad. The next morning, the camp receives word that Bland was caught on his way back to Philadelphia; slave hunters killed Bland and sent Otha’s family back to their owners. Mournfully, Otha recounts working as a slave and trying to focus only on the work. He recounts the helplessness he felt to fight back against his owner and to protect himself and his wife from the owner. Otha remains as determined as ever to free his family. In Chapter 22, Moses’ group packs up their camp and begins to travel with Hiram and his group. Hiram feels responsible for Bland’s death, as Hiram worries that he might have made a mistake when making forged ID...
