Summary

In Chapter 7, Corrine continues to visit Lockless occasionally and to hint at her desire to take ownership of Hiram. Hiram and Sophia discuss their hypothetical futures, and they subtly express their respective desires for freedom. After some consideration, Hiram decides to talk to Georgie Parks, the free black man who is rumored to be a member of the Underground Railroad. However, when Hiram broaches the subject with Georgie, Georgie becomes evasive and advises Hiram to simply continue living as a slave. Hiram persists, and Georgie eventually relents, telling Hiram to meet with him in exactly one week. In Chapter 8, Hiram tells Sophia of his meeting with Georgie. Sophia agrees to go with Hiram, as she also wishes to escape slavery. Thena quickly deduces Hiram’s plan due to Hiram’s altered disposition, and she tries to persuade him not to risk an escape attempt...
