Chapter 31 Summary

They take Reacher to a cell in the local FBI building until Nelson Blake shows up. Then, Alan Deerfield arrives.

Deerfield insists that Julia Lamarr was there trying to save Rita Scimeca when Reacher killed her. he proceeds to tell Reacher how he thinks the story unfolded—all making Julia look like a humanitarian and hero, and Reacher look like her killer. They say they'll drop it if he keeps his mouth shut about what really happened. He refuses, saying that his own lawyer has their report saying he didn't kill Lorraine Stanley so they'll still have explaining to do.

Reacher relents, saying that he'll keep his mouth shut for Rita Scimeca's sake. He runs into Harper on his way out. She gives him her FBI flight voucher so he can get back to New York. When he lands, he goes straight to Jodie's office. He...
