Summary

In Chapter 34, Emily encounters a young man and discovers it is Lady Charlton’s grandson Justin, who everyone believed had been killed in the war. She convinces him to come in to see his grandmother, who greets him coldly, accusing him of deserting and interrogating him on how he managed to survive. Lady Charlton does not believe him that he was imprisoned by the Germans and had amnesia so could not identify himself, and cruelly rejects him. Emily stands up for him and tells Lady Charlton off, insisting she will no longer stay with her. In Chapter 35, just as Emily is packing her things, Lady Charlton comes to the cottage to apologize and beg her not to leave. They make every effort to track down Justin but cannot find him.
