Stefan's Lapis Lazuli ring is one of a series of three rings which were made for his former lover, Katherine, to protect vampires from sunlight. Both Stefan and his bother Damon are given one of these magical rings by Katherine before she takes her own life. Stefan takes her own ring as a memento of her, and ends up using it to become engaged to Elena Gilbert.
