Green Gang

When Violet sees her suitcase, she believes that if her mother’s things are still inside. That means her mother knew nothing of Violet’s abduction.

“The Valley of Amazement”

“The Valley of Amazement” is a painting that is among Violet’s mother’s things when she unpacks the valise in the Hall of Tranquility. The painting appears again and again throughout the novel as it was painted by Lu Shing, Violet’s father. Violet believes the painting is an omen of danger. Flora is the only one of the three women who sees it for what it is, a bad replica of another artist’s work.
