Summary

The section entitled "2017" begins with Chapter 37. Remembering her own history, Julie felt faith that a higher power must be present. Her first memory was of crawling up the narrow staircase of her family’s home in Vietnam. There was no railing to prevent her from falling. Her second memory was when she was on the boat leaving Vietnam, with hundreds of people begging God for survival. She also remembered her sight-giving eye surgery. Then she recounted her father's joy when she had told him that she had been accepted into Harvard Law School. Ultimately, her memories cause her to believe in herself and God's guiding hand. She realizes that what happens to us does not matter; what does matter is how those things affect us and how we remember them.
