Chapters 25-29 Summary
In Chapter 25, Admiral Canaris and Schellenberg, both from rival factions in the German intelligence agencies, are speaking. Although sworn to destroy the other, the two men begin their mornings with a horseback ride. Schellenberg is telling Canaris of some information he has received via a Soviet spy in MI5. The conversation turns to Vicary and Vogel. Schellenberg leaves this meeting to be with Himmler and Hitler, and these two men are interested in Vogel's behavior as well. Himmler assigns Schellenberg to penetrate Vogel's network, even though Hitler has chosen not to replace Canaris just yet.
The distrust and betrayal between Canaris and Schellenberg is clear, and Vogel is unwittingly becoming a major pawn between the two men. Their own careers and power plays are becoming more important to them than the success of the German Intelligence efforts to find out where the invasion is....
