Chapters 13-20 Summary

In chapter thirteen, Danny is driving through Iowa. When they catch sight of Omaha, the entire city is on fire. They search for a way across the river and find a school building Kittridge believes he can defend. They plan to spend the night there and find some canned food in the cafeteria. That night, April joins Kittridge while he's standing watch. Kittridge shares a story of his time in the war in the Middle East and April seems to understand him more than he'd expected. Kittridge gives her one of his guns as protection. The next morning, they find a military convoy and Kittridge introduces himself as a medically-discharged Marine, capturing the attention of Porcheki, the commanding officer. She agrees to take Kittridge's group to her base.
