Summary

Chapter 1, set in December of 1944, Hugo Langley thought he was going to die when the Blenheim, a bomber plane he was flying, was hit by enemy fire. He briefly considered that he did not want to die. He had hoped to inherit Langley Hall and enjoy the prestige of being the squire. He knew his wife, Brenda, and their son, Teddy, would be all right without him. In fact, he had little emotion when he thought of his family and knew that Brenda would find someone else if he did die. Hugo managed to get the hood of the plane open and parachuted safely to the ground. When he tried to get up, he blacked out from pain when he tried to stand.
