Summary

In Chapter Four: Wedding Bells, Kamala says that whenever she travels, she goes to the highest court in the new country. However, she thinks the United States Supreme Court Building is the most beautiful. When she visited in March of 2013, she was escorted into her seat in the courtroom until the judges arrived. The case was Hollingsworth v. Perry, a case against a California law that prohibited gay marriage. She remembers when the law was first voted on and she was asked to help perform marriages. Unfortunately, the state took away their licenses soon after. In 2008, the California Supreme Court deemed it unconstitutional, but the vote was passed in November of 2008. A law-suit was filed to fight it and it took eight months to get to the U.S. Federal District Court.
