Family Is the Most Important Thing

From the beginning of the book, there is the concern for Louis. The male and female swan care for their little ones. They are particularly concerned about Louis. The father swan will do whatever he can to help his son. The swan will even steal to help him. Even though it makes the father feel bad to steal, he puts Louis first.

Never Give Up

The father swan, Louis, and Sam all show a persistence. The father does not give up until he has something that Louis can use as a voice. Louis will not give up until he can play the trumpet and not only earn money for his father but court Serena. Sam always comes to Louis's aid no matter when Louis asks him to come.
