In chapter seven, School Days, Louis thinks about his communication problem and thinks of his own answer. He will learn to read and write. He will carry a slate and chalk and be able to talk to anyone who can read. He thinks about how to do that and decides to look for Sam. He takes off from the warm springs and looks for Sam.
