Summary

Chapter 1 is set in Seattle Washington on Saturday, June 24, 2017. A teenager named Kurt Schill launches his boat into the ocean. No one other than the Indians are actually allowed to set crab pots at this time of year, but Kurt is setting his traps very late at night and collecting them before daylight. He hauls in his trap and believes the weight indicates that he has had a good night. “Then he saw the hand” (4).

In Chapter 2, Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite arrives at the scene. She and her partners, Kinsington Rowe (identified throughout this guide as Kins) are the homicide detectives on call. She talks to one of the officers on the scene and learns that no one has actually pulled in the crab trap yet. Tracy comes up with a plan that includes setting up a screen to keep bystanders from congregating...
