Friendship

The relationships Apollo develops throughout the novel show the importance of friendship, something that Apollo only comes to understand after spending time as a mortal.

First, Apollo’s friendship with Meg is the strongest relationship he has. This is not just because of the things they have gone through, though that certainly plays a part. Apollo feels connected to Meg. He understands her because he has been through many of the same things she has. Both are working to escape a cycle of abuse perpetrated by their fathers. Both have been sent on a seemingly impossible quest, and both must face the source of their abuse. At the end of the novel, when Apollo visits Meg after returning to his godly form, Apollo says, “... you will always be my friend. And if you ever need me, even just to talk, I will be here” (395).
