Summary

The narrative then shifts focus to Adam and Klaus. Adam had become acquainted with Klaus through Adam’s father. Adam and Klaus had a friendly rapport. Klaus once gave Adam a small wooden box as a present; the box had a secret compartment, which Klaus showed to Adam. One day, Klaus was diagnosed with a terminal case of pancreatic cancer. Adam and his parents visited Klaus in the hospital. Klaus’ diagnosis occurred during Adam’s senior year of high school, thereby adding to Adam’s stress regarding the debate championship. The narrative then shifts to Darren after his supposed friends had abandoned him near Clinton Lake. It was cold out, and Darren did not know the direction back towards his home.
