Summary

The prologue opens at a police station in Topeka, Kansas in the mid-1990s. A teenage boy named Darren was in police custody after throwing a billiards cue ball at someone. He talked to two detectives about the incident while also struggling to understand why he had done it. Chapter 1, “The Spread (Adam),” takes place in the mid-1990s in Topeka, Kansas. A high school student named Adam was in a boat on Clinton Lake near Topeka. He is accompanied by his girlfriend Amber.
