Summary

In Chapter 10, narrated by Alice, Alice is confronted by Callie when she arrives home. Callie claims that her substitute teacher made her do regular classwork, which Callie considers a “human rights abuse” (105). Alice is frustrated with her daughter’s arrogance. She informs her that being treated like a normal child for one day will not hurt her. Callie bursts out that she knew her mother would not understand what it was like to be treated like a “retard” (106) as she glances at Eddie. Alice orders her daughter to go to her room.
