The Signal Andy Gives With His Pencil

Andy’s signal in the classroom symbolizes friendship. At the beginning of the novel, the signal is for Georgie. In the middle, as a result of Georgie’s fight with Andy it is for Russ. At the end of the novel, it is once again for Georgie.

The Dog Walking Business

The dog walking business represents Georgie’s partnership with Andy as well as Georgie’s abilities. Thus when Andy wants to involve Russ, he is threatening Georgie on two fronts. One is on the level of his friendship with Andy, but the other is his role as the person who “owns” the business as Russ has ideas that can improve the business. In this sense, Russ is not only taking his place as Andy’s friends, but also as the mastermind of the business.
