Prologue through Chapter 1 Summary

The prologue opens on December 23, 2005, with a parent living the horror of not knowing where a child is. Daniel Stone had been in the park along Freedom Trail in Boston when Trixie, his daughter, was four. He was pushing her in the stroller and stopped for a burger. He begins pushing the stroller again only to discover the child inside wasn't Trixie. Daniel had panicked, calling for help. Police arrived but Daniel was the one to find Trixie, twenty-four minutes later. Now, Daniel is again faced with a distance between himself and Trixie but this time it's Trixie, a teenager, who's pulled away. Trixie, meanwhile, has managed to sneak a little food to a "dropped dog" named Juno where she's manning a check point on a sled race. She also remembers being lost at four but only in pieces...
