Summary

In Chapter 4, Lale gets to know the crude and violent young SS guard that watches over him. Despite Lale’s hatred for him as his natural enemy, they develop a strange sort of friendship. Lale offers him dating advice, and Baretski helps him write to prisoner 34902. She responds that she is also from Slovakia, has been in Auschwitz since early April, and works in one of the warehouses nicknamed the Canada. She does not tell Lale her name. They decide to meet on Sunday at the compound. They meet for a brief moment in Chapter 5, and someone from behind him tells Lale that her name is Gita. Lale is smitten, and later that night Gita giggles and re-reads Lale’s letter over and over again with her friends Dana and Ivana.
