Summary

As Chapter 18 begins, Flavia is at Greyminster School. As she walks in the hallway and sees the names of boys missing in action she thinks about her father’s behavior and realizes that the school is also cold. She goes into the chemistry lab, but finds it boring. She continues walking until she finds the tower that Twining jumped from. She climbs the stairs despite the sign warning her not to go up the tower. She comes to a locked door and hears a voice from below asking who is there. Flavia ignores the voice and picks the lock. The voice thinks that the intruder is a boy and tells him to come down. This lets Flavia know that the person has not seen her. Then the person comes up, looks in the room she has just entered and leaves, locking the door...
