Winthrop Island, New York, Summers 1930, 1951, 1969

Winthrop Island is the overarching setting of the entire novel in all three decades. It is an Island off New England in Long Island Sound. The Island is home to a large Portuguese population that live and work there year round. The Families from the mainland own property on the Island and live there in the summer. They gather in elite places like the Winthrop Island Club, and the locals provide for the vacationers. In 1930, Bianca had immigrated to Winthrop Island about a decade prior. Miranda’s first time on Winthrop Island is in 1951 for the marriage of her mother to Fisher. She returns to Winthrop Island in 1969 after leaving her abusive husband in London.
