Summary

Miranda returned to Winthrop Island by fishing boat after 18 years away from the Island in May 1969 in “Foreword: 1969.” She told the fisherman her black eye was from a car accident and payed him to stay quiet about her arrival. She went to the Medeiros’ general store, feeling like she had hurtled back in time to her 18-year-old self. Mrs. Medeiro agreed to drive her to Greyfriars. Miranda asked Mrs. Mediero about her grandson, Joseph, who had recently escaped from prison, but Mrs. Medeiro did not provide a sufficient answer. Mrs. Medeiro told Miranda that her mother had to take in boarders—artists—to keep Greyfriars afloat.
