Summary

In Chapter 7, Sophia remembers receiving a postcard from Venice with a gorgeous photo on the front. Sophia asks why all of the buildings seem to be in the water and Grandmother tells her all about her trip to Venice. They pretend to rebuild Venice outside. Sophia asks if she can call Grandmother “Mama” instead. At night, there is a strong storm and Sophia cries that the palace they built is buried in the mud.

In Chapter 8, Grandmother, Sophia, and Papa take a boat out to The Cairn, the last island out in the Gulf of Finland, to have a picnic. Each person goes off in their own direction to enjoy the weather. Grandmother finds Sophia swimming while Papa sets up fishing nets.
