Epilogue

Eph, Vasiliy, Setrakian, Nora, and Zack regroup at Kelly’s house. Setrakian is recovering, slowly. He believes that they are witnessing the end of humankind. Zack helps Eph upload footage of Ansel Barbour in the shed for all of the online world to see. Kelly appears at the house, but she has been turned. Zack blacks out from terror. Kelly looks at her son –her intended victim –and flees as Vasiliy raises a silver sword. Eph knows the custody battle is far from over. He then pours himself a drink.

Analysis

As the novel closes, Eph, Vasiliy, Nora, Zack, and Setrakian are all recovering. Reflecting on what Setrakian had said about an alert society being more difficult to subdue than an orderly and unaware society, Zack and Eph upload a video of Ansel Barbour to the internet. Setrakian, however, takes a more pessimistic...
