On the third day lost at sea, nothing happened. The raft was being moved by the breeze. It was easy to lose a sense of direction since the raft was being tossed about so much and there was no point of reference - no front or back of the raft. He used his keys to mark the days, scratching each date on a the gunwale. He made the mistake of marking February 30th down instead of March 2nd.
